A black hole is a region of space where matter has collapsed in on itself. This collapse results in an enormous amount of mass being concentrated into an extremely small area. The gravitational pull of this region is so strong that nothing can escape from it – not even light.

Black holes come in a variety of sizes. Primordial black holes can be as small as an atom with the mass of a large mountain and are thought to have been created not long after the big bang.

Stellar black holes can be twenty times the mass of the sun. They form when giant stars die in supernova explosions and then collapse inwards on themselves. (Almost always described in documentaries as a catastrophic/cataclysmic process.)

Supermassive black holes have masses greater than a million suns and scientists are not sure how they are formed. Some have suggested that they formed out of the collapse of massive clouds of gas during the early stages of the formation of the galaxy.

Black holes have three main parts; the outer and inner event horizon and the singularity. You would still be able to escape from a black hole's gravity from the outer event horizon because the pull is not as strong there.

The inner event horizon is the boundary around the mouth of the black hole where particles lose their ability to escape; once they cross that boundary they cannot leave. This is invariably described as The Point of No Return. (It was only through great restraint, and the fact that I couldn’t find the version that I wanted, that the song from The Phantom of the Opera didn’t make it into this mix.)

The centre of the black hole is called the singularity. This is the single point in spacetime where the mass of the black hole is concentrated and where gravity is strongest.

Black holes are the universe's ulitimate killers. They tear apart stars, warp the fabric of spacetime and astronomers estimate there are anywhere from 10 million to a billion stellar black holes in the Milky Way.

Supermassive Black Hole by 2Cellos ft. Naya Rivera
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the...
(Ooh, you set my soul...)
Into the supermassive

Supermassive black hole

Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden
Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain?
Black hole sun
Won't you come?
Won't you come?

Momentum by The Hush Sound
All we need is a little bit of momentum
Breakdown these walls that we've built around ourselves
All we need is a little bit of inertia
Breakdown and tell breakdown and tell
That you are

Black Acres by Elysian Fields
Touch me now
Touch me
The black acres are claiming me
They're claiming me

Gravity by Sara Bareilles
You hold me without touch
You keep me without chains
I never wanted anything so much
Than to drown in your love and not feel your rain

Set me free
Leave me be
I don't wanna fall another moment into your gravity
Here I am and I stand so tall
I'm just the way I'm supposed to be
But you're on to me
And all over me

Black Black Heart by David Usher
Black black heart
Why would you offer more?
Why would you make it easier on me to satisfy?
I'm on fire
I'm rotting to the core
I'm eating all your kings and queens
All your sex and your diamonds

Black Hole by Aqualung
You say I'm a black hole
Singularity
My own supernova
A blazing blind catastrophe
And for once I was a star
A long time before that
Somebody's sun

Cosmic Love by Florence + The Machine
A falling star fell from your heart and landed in my eyes
I screamed aloud, as it tore through them, and now it's left me blind

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day
I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart
